Police Sergeant Charged with Assault

Forest Heights Police Sergeant Jalen Rasard Cephus is facing first- and second-degree assault charges following an off-duty altercation in Waldorf, Maryland. According to charging documents, Cephus punched and choked his friend's romantic partner during an argument. Deputies say alcohol appeared to have been a factor. Cephus was held without bond overnight and then released on his own recognizance. A preliminary hearing is set for 1:00 p.m. on August 12, 2026, at the Charles County Courthouse. The United States Park Police arrested Cephus for drunk driving in 2024 and he is currently being sued by a woman claiming false imprisonment, assault, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
